Thursday, the 4. September in 2018, was our last day in the Sketching with Hardware Workshop. On this day, I was on turn to document the day progress. I started in the morning and asked each team questions about project status, stress level and how they thought the workshop after one week.

The final day

Tuesday, the 12th September was unfortunately the last day of the event and therefore also the day of the final presentation. This means that most teams were busy with their projects until late at night.

The following diagram provides information about the previous night.

The final day had come. Eight days of breaking things, tinkering, and soldering have passed. Even though it was the last day, there was still some work left. The deadline was at 1 pm when the first external guests (mostly professors and PhD students) arrived. Every team had to present their work and in the end the students and guests voted the best project. Even though it was required that the projects had to work outdoor all demos (except for team 7) were held indoor due to the weather outside.

Final Day (Day 7)

Day seven (or more precisely day nine) is the day of truth. A week of very hard work, has not passed without leaving a trace on the teams.

The most common signs on this day: Dark circles, burns from soldering and hallucinations due to the Fumes of the laser cutter. Nevertheless, the motivation is still very high. The last components are lasered, Code and hardware are getting perfected.

The nervousness is rising. At 12 o’clock the first external guests are expected to have a look at our work and presentations. They are in addition to normal spectators, also a kind of jury. By voting, they decide about the best project at the end oft our Workshop.

Sketching with Hardware 2015b – The final presentations

The final presentation of the projects was scheduled for 12 o´clock, and just started as planned. All teams could finalize their projects, some of them under pressure in the last minutes available (Thanks to the WiFi Problems 😉 ). All 8 teams were in attendance, the two supervisors of the internship Bernhard and Patrick and also 6 guests from the professorial chair of media informatics.
The presentation of the projects began in ascending order of the teamnumbers.

After all, the bic concert (also known as the final presentation) has come and the participants are excited to see how the concluding projects sound (and look) like. Questions, like “is it really possible to connect a pan flute to a glockenspiel?” fill the room. Here is what the teams have achieved:

Day 8: The final 3 hours before the presentation

We were warned by Bernhard, that in the last years the final hours before the presentation were always cursed and no project was safe from magically breaking down and going up in flames.

With this in mind every sketcher is on the edge of their seats and rushing to finish their work. Well everyone except for Group 2, who finalized their “one-man/woman-vest” the day before, Group 78, which is shifting between updating their mashroom with even cooler sounds and “lending” it as a testing device to other groups and Group 5, that took the last 3 hours off of since their xylophone was already working like a charm.

Group 1, which took a night shift the day before to wire up all the existing pawns with LEDs, is now waiting for the 3D Printer to finish their second set. Nelson is not shy to brag about the 500+ soldering connections it took to make their cool boardgame-soundmatrix a reality. If there was a award for that -and there should be-Group 1 would be well deserving. Even though there is some bugfixing ahead before “Pawntatonic” will work, both teammembers are confident they will finish before the presentation.

Soldering the last pawns.

Soldering the last pawns.

Day 7 – Final Presentation

It seems like the overall slogan of today is “gather your energy”! Not only that some teams look pretty tired from working till late in the past few days. No, most of the teams are facing energy/power issues right before the presentation. But in the end each team presented their projects in a charming and confident way. And even the jurors are blown away from the overall topic and the ideas.
